DeSantis Drops Presidential Bid, Throws Support to Trump

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis has ended his presidential bid two days before the New Hampshire primary.

DeSantis, coming off a second-place showing in the Iowa caucus, said there wasn’t a clear path to victory, and that he would support the Republican party’s eventual nominee.

He added that former President Donald Trump was preferable to another front-running candidate, former South Carolina Gov. and United Nations Ambassador Nikki Haley. “We can’t go back to the old Republican guard of yesteryear, a repackaged form of warmed-over corporatism that Nikki Haley represents,” DeSantis said.

Haley, at an event in Seabrook, N.H., said of DeSantis: “He ran a great race, he’s been a good governor, and we wish him well.” She pointed out that there was “one fella and one lady left” in the race, and said “may the best woman win.”

DeSantis announced he was suspending his campaign in a 4½-minute video posted online.

“It’s clear to me that a majority of Republican primary voters want to give Donald Trump another chance,” DeSantis said in the video.

He is among several politicians who have suspended their races just as the primary season kicks off. After the New Hampshire primary on Tuesday, the focus is expected to shift to the South Carolina primary in February.
