With smoke enveloping the Northeastern United States, flights have been delayed in some of the country’s busiest airports. On Wednesday, LaGuardia Airport, Newark Liberty International Airport and Philadelphia International Airport all experienced departure and arrival delays of up to two hours.

The smoke is more difficult for flights, according to a video released by the FAA, as navigation systems “can be less effective through solid particles such as smoke and ash.”

Just before noon, flights bound for LGA were experiencing delays of nearly an hour on average, according to data from FlightAware, a flight-tracking website, with departure delays of nearly 30 minutes.

Earlier in the day, flights heading to LGA airport had been paused, per the FAA, which said that flights to the airport had been “slowed.”

Philadelphia International Airport

After a rough start in the morning, Philadelphia Airport was experiencing few delays, according to FlightAware. The airport had seen a pause in flights from airports in the Northeast, Mid-Atlantic and Ohio due to low visibility earlier Thursday morning.
