Sedans are often overlooked these days in favor of larger, more expensive SUVs, but for those in the know, the sedan is an excellent choice for a daily driver, even for families. Why? Because in addition to being spacious, comfortable, and easy to get in and out of, sedans are also typically more efficient than equivalent SUVs, so they can be cheaper to own and operate. If you’re here, though, you don’t need to be convinced about the strengths of a good used family sedan — you just need help finding one, and we’re here to help.

Contents
1. 2017 Chevrolet Impala2. 2017 Chrysler 3003. 2018 Ford Fusion4. 2016 Honda Accord5. 2018 Hyundai Sonata6. 2019 Kia Optima7. 2018 Mazda68. 2018 Subaru Legacy9. 2017 Toyota Avalon 10. 2017 Toyota Camry

Here are 10 of the best used family sedans you’ll find on a $20,000 budget.

1. 2017 Chevrolet Impala

Large, comfortable, and yet still boasting a sense of style, the 2017 Chevrolet Impala is a great choice for families. This is especially when it’s fitted with the optional Driver Confidence Package. That adds rear cross-traffic alert, blind-spot monitoring, lane-departure warning, and forward collision alert. Look for the LT trim to get features like smartphone integration, an 8-inch display, dual-zone climate control, and more.

2. 2017 Chrysler 300

With an appearance as impactful as the interior is spacious, the 2017 Chrysler 300 delves into luxury territory while still delivering substantial value for money. Both rear-wheel (RWD) and all-wheel drive (AWD) are available, making this a good choice for those in winter weather areas. On our budget, the base 300 Limited model is likely the best fit, with standard dual-zone climate control, a 12-way power driver’s seat, and keyless entry.

3. 2018 Ford Fusion

The 2018 Ford
F,
+0.73%
Fusion is a bit smaller than the Impala and 300 but still roomy enough for families, with space for up to three kids or two adults in the rear seat. Advanced safety systems are optional on the Fusion, but the Titanium and Platinum models that fit our budget should include them. Savvy shoppers may even find the Fusion Hybrid and its 42-mpg city rating within reach.

4. 2016 Honda Accord

A perennial front-runner in Kelley Blue Book’s family car awards, the 2016 Honda
HMC,
+1.19%
Accord is one of the most obvious choices on this list. Roomy and comfortable seating, a large trunk, lots of standard tech, and available Honda Sensing advanced safety features on every trim give the Accord lots of appeal, even before you learn it was also an IIHS Top Safety Pick+ winner when new.

Don’t miss: A used car with a rebuilt title can be a good deal, but there’s a few things to know before you buy one

5. 2018 Hyundai Sonata

If you’re looking for a refined, tech-packed sedan that looks newer and more expensive than it is, the 2018 Hyundai
HYMTF,
+5.63%
Sonata may be for you. Sleekly styled and smartly appointed, the top-trim Sonata Limited should fit our budget, offering features like LED headlights and taillights, automatic emergency braking, lane-keeping assist, and parking sensors.

6. 2019 Kia Optima

Even newer than the Sonata, the 2019 Kia Optima offers many of the same strengths and a few additional ones, such as Kia’s
000270,
-0.90%
Advanced Driver Assistance System as standard equipment. This system includes lane-change assist, lane-keeping assist, collision avoidance assist, and more. The Optima’s spacious, comfortable cabin also comfortably seats five, with even 6-footers finding plenty of legroom in the back.

7. 2018 Mazda6

Stylish, well-equipped, and comfortable — those traits ought to be enough for a family sedan, but the 2018 Mazda6
MZDAY,
+0.83%
takes it one step further and throws in “fun to drive.” It’s also fitted with an upscale interior that borders on luxurious, offers good rear-seat legroom, and scores a Top Safety Pick rating from the IIHS.

8. 2018 Subaru Legacy

If dirt roads, winter weather, or other slippery surfaces are part of your routine, the 2018 Subaru
FUJHY,
+0.91%
Legacy and its standard AWD may be particularly attractive. Standard smartphone integration makes keeping your tech current a breeze, and the Legacy’s 15-cubic-foot trunk is properly capacious. Our budget affords the 2.5i Premium trim, which includes the EyeSight safety system with adaptive cruise control, pre-collision braking, and more.

9. 2017 Toyota Avalon

The 2017 Toyota Avalon is another full-size sedan that dips its toes into the luxury realm — in many ways, it’s essentially a Lexus ES. That translates to a quiet cabin, a serene ride, plush comfort, and plenty of space. Toyota’s
TM,
-0.17%
Safety Sense-P suite is standard on the Avalon, with features like pedestrian detection, adaptive cruise control, and lane-departure alert with steering assist.

10. 2017 Toyota Camry

If the Avalon is a bit bigger than you’d like, but you appreciate the reputation for reliability and value, the 2017 Toyota Camry could be a good fit. Another obvious choice due to its all-around excellence as a sedan, the Camry is great for families because of its spacious rear seat and large trunk, comfortable ride quality, and general ease of use. Look for the Camry in nearly loaded XLE form with gear like leather upholstery, heated front seats, and even premium JBL audio.
