Shares of Imax are trading higher after the company scored its largest ever share of a movie’s global opening weekend box office with the $35 million debut of “Oppenheimer.”
The stock is up 6.3% at $17.45 in midday trading. Shares have gained 19% since the start of the year.
The maker of large cinema screens said Monday that “Oppenheimer,” which was shot with Imax cameras, earned it $35 million, representing 20% of the Christopher Nolan-directed film’s total receipts. That’s the largest share of a box office debut the company has ever taken, Imax said.
Imax said it had its fourth-largest box office weekend ever, bringing in a total of $46.4 million worldwide.
The strong weekend for “Oppenheimer” and co-headliner “Barbie” have lifted shares of theater-chain AMC Entertainment by a third to $5.90. Shares of Cinemark are up 1% at $15.60.
