© Reuters. U.S. stocks lower at close of trade; Dow Jones Industrial Average down 0.52%

Investing.com – U.S. stocks were lower after the close on Wednesday, as losses in the , and sectors led shares lower.

At the close in NYSE, the fell 0.52%, while the index lost 0.76%, and the index lost 1.15%.

The best performers of the session on the were The Travelers Companies Inc (NYSE:), which rose 1.19% or 1.94 points to trade at 165.42 at the close. Meanwhile, Home Depot Inc (NYSE:) added 0.28% or 0.92 points to end at 333.06 and Merck & Company Inc (NYSE:) was up 0.06% or 0.07 points to 108.73 in late trade.

The worst performers of the session were Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:), which fell 3.57% or 1.24 points to trade at 33.53 at the close. Walgreens Boots Alliance Inc (NASDAQ:) declined 1.43% or 0.41 points to end at 28.19 and Caterpillar Inc (NYSE:) was down 1.03% or 2.86 points to 274.51.

The top performers on the S&P 500 were Progressive Corp (NYSE:) which rose 8.86% to 136.13, MarketAxess Holdings Inc (NASDAQ:) which was up 5.49% to settle at 245.33 and Allstate Corp (NYSE:) which gained 4.45% to close at 109.75.

The worst performers were Jack Henry & Associates Inc (NASDAQ:) which was down 7.03% to 156.47 in late trade, DISH Network Corporation (NASDAQ:) which lost 5.95% to settle at 7.11 and ResMed Inc (NYSE:) which was down 5.01% to 173.70 at the close.

The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Ebet Inc (NASDAQ:) which rose 109.16% to 0.09, Digital Brands Group Inc (NASDAQ:) which was up 91.27% to settle at 0.78 and Tivic Health Systems Inc (NASDAQ:) which gained 80.11% to close at 0.07.

The worst performers were RVL Pharmaceuticals PLC (NASDAQ:) which was down 50.85% to 0.21 in late trade, Impel Neuropharma Inc (NASDAQ:) which lost 42.04% to settle at 0.63 and Energous Co (NASDAQ:) which was down 35.16% to 2.22 at the close.

Falling stocks outnumbered advancing ones on the New York Stock Exchange by 2130 to 794 and 76 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 2472 fell and 1025 advanced, while 103 ended unchanged.

Shares in ResMed Inc (NYSE:) fell to 52-week lows; losing 5.01% or 9.17 to 173.70. Shares in Walgreens Boots Alliance Inc (NASDAQ:) fell to 5-year lows; losing 1.43% or 0.41 to 28.19. Shares in RVL Pharmaceuticals PLC (NASDAQ:) fell to all time lows; down 50.85% or 0.21 to 0.21. Shares in Impel Neuropharma Inc (NASDAQ:) fell to all time lows; falling 42.04% or 0.45 to 0.63. Shares in Energous Co (NASDAQ:) fell to 52-week highs; down 35.16% or 1.20 to 2.22.

The , which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 1.94% to 16.78.

Gold Futures for December delivery was down 0.62% or 11.95 to $1,923.25 a troy ounce. Elsewhere in commodities trading, Crude oil for delivery in September fell 2.16% or 1.75 to hit $79.24 a barrel, while the October Brent oil contract fell 1.88% or 1.60 to trade at $83.29 a barrel.

EUR/USD was unchanged 0.27% to 1.09, while USD/JPY rose 0.54% to 146.35.

The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.26% at 103.36.
