Iranian human rights activist Narges Mohammadi has been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize “for her fight against the oppression of women in Iran and her fight to promote human rights and freedom for all”, the Nobel committee announced on Friday.

Mohammadi, 51, who is in prison in Iran, has campaigned against the death penalty and for freedom of expression — in particular against rules requiring women to remain “out of sight”. She has been arrested by the regime 13 times, convicted five times, and sentenced to a total of 31 years in prison and 154 lashes.

She has become emblematic of the women’s struggles in Iran, which came to the fore last year when Mahsa Jina Amini was killed while in the custody of the Iranian morality police, which triggered a wave of protest.

The committee said: “This year’s peace prize also recognises the hundreds of thousands of people who, in the preceding year, have demonstrated against the theocratic regime’s policies of discrimination and oppression targeting women.”
