on Wednesday said it was recalling around 1 million Toyota and Lexus vehicles in the U.S., citing issues over potential airbag malfunctions. The recall affects 2020 through 2022 models, including many Toyota hybrids. Toyota, in a statement, said the vehicles in question have front passenger-seat sensors “that could have been improperly manufactured, causing a short circuit.” The company added: “This would not allow the airbag system to properly classify the occupant’s weight, and the airbag may not deploy as designed in certain crashes, increasing the risk of injury.” Toyota and Lexus dealers will inspect the sensors and replace them at no cost to the owners, the company said, adding that it would notify affected customers by mid-February. Shares were up 0.2% after hours.
