Congress will vote on another funding extension to forestall a government shutdown after reaching agreement to push the deadline back to March.
The deal is expected to be unveiled later today. It preserves the two-deadline structure of Speaker Mike Johnson’s previous agreement, marking the next dates at March 1 and March 8. Currently, the deadlines are Jan. 19 and Feb. 2.
Known as a continuing resolution, the proposal has to be approved by both the House and the Senate by Friday in order to avoid a partial government shutdown.
The agreement gives Johnson (R., La.) more time to coalesce his caucus, which has been divided over spending cuts. Some Republicans pushed back at an agreement this month that would have funded the government for 2024 with a budget of $1.59 trillion, a level former Speaker Kevin McCarthy agreed to with the Biden administration last year.
That agreement angered some Republicans, who wanted steeper spending cuts. A group pushed Johnson last week to abandon the plan, but the Speaker said Friday he was sticking to the agreement, which he announced a week ago.
