Is the Stock Market Open or Closed on New Year’s Day?Are Banks and the USPS Open Today? Are International Markets Open on New Year’s Day? How Does the Stock Market Perform Around New Year’s Day? What Else Should I Know?

New Year’s Day 2024 is here, but investors may be spending the holiday reflecting on 2023.

From high inflation to geopolitical conflicts to the artificial intelligence investing frenzy, last year was one for the history books.

Despite that, the three major U.S. indexes ultimately delivered gains worth clinking glasses over. The
Dow Jones Industrial Average
gained 14% in 2023, while the
S&P 500
climbed 24%, and the
Nasdaq Composite
soared 43% percent.

Here’s what investors should know about holiday trading hours.

Is the Stock Market Open or Closed on New Year’s Day?

The New York Stock Exchange and the
Nasdaq Stock Market
will be closed Monday Jan. 1 in observance of New Year’s Day, which is a federal holiday. The U.S. bond market and over-the-counter markets will be shut, too.

Markets will reopen at 9:30 a.m. Eastern on Tuesday, Jan. 2.

Are Banks and the USPS Open Today?

Federal Reserve banks are closed on Monday, Jan. 1. United States Post Service locations will also be closed.

Are International Markets Open on New Year’s Day?

Foreign exchanges—including those in London, Hong Kong, Shanghai, Toronto, and Tokyo—will also be closed Jan. 1 for New Year’s Day.

How Does the Stock Market Perform Around New Year’s Day?

History suggests January may bring investors slight gains. Based on data back to 1950, on average, the
S&P 500
rises 1.1% during the first month of a year, according to Dow Jones Market Data.

What Else Should I Know?

This week, investors can look for the latest slate of economic data and financial reports from
Cal-Maine Foods
and
Walgreens Boots Alliance,
among other companies.
