Bullion prices had briefly hit three-month lows on Wednesday, breaking a month-long lull after Fed Chair Jerome Powell testified before the House Financial Services Committee of Congress that interest rates will likely have to move higher to curb inflation.

Powell is now set to later in the day, potentially offering up more cues on future rate hikes. Any signals on monetary policy are likely to factor into gold prices, given the yellow metal’s sensitivity to U.S. yields.

The prospect of further increases in U.S. interest rates has weighed heavily on gold over the past month, given that it increases the opportunity cost of holding bullion.

While the yellow metal has held a trading range of between $1,930 and $2,000 for the past month, analysts expect a breakout towards the downside, especially as the strengthens amid uncertainty over the Fed.

Other precious metals were also nursing steep losses this week. and futures steadied on Thursday after sinking to three-month lows in the prior session.

Copper supported by China hopes

Copper prices rose slightly on Thursday, extending gains into a third straight session amid hopes that continued stimulus measures in China will help support demand for the red metal this year.

rose 0.1% to $3.9805 a pound, and were trading close to a one-month high.

China trimmed its benchmark this week, and is widely expected to further loosen monetary policy as it struggles to shore up a slowing economic recovery.

While the cut disappointed some traders hoping for a deeper reduction, it reinforced bets that the country will roll out more stimulus measures to support growth.
