Smoke from Canadian wildfires spread across the U.S. midwest on Wednesday and threatens cities further east Thursday.
It’s an additional worry for travelers as the busy July 4th holiday approaches, along with severe weather and heat waves in the South. The AAA, the federation of automobile clubs, expects the number of trips for this weekend will be the highest since 2019, before the Covid-19 pandemic.
Air quality was at unhealthy levels Thursday morning in Chicago and Washington, according to IQAir, a site that tracks pollution. It was unhealthy for sensitive groups in Detroit and Minneapolis.
New York’s rating of air quality was considered moderate. Nevertheless, Governor Kathy Hochul kept the health advisory for the state in place for another day. “New Yorkers should remain vigilant and take steps to stay safe,” she said in a statement.
United Airlines
(ticker: UAL) had the most flight cancellations for a second day, with 250 journeys called off.
JetBlue
(JBLU) had only canceled 15 flights as of early Thursday, while
Delta
(DAL) had canceled just 4.
