Columbia University has cancelled plans for a university-wide graduation ceremony, following weeks of unrest on campus triggered by pro-Palestinian protesters.
The university said on Monday that it would instead make its “school-level ceremonies, where students are honoured individually alongside their peers” the centrepiece of commencement activities. The university-wide ceremony had been scheduled for May 15.
“We will focus our resources on those school ceremonies and on keeping them safe, respectful, and running smoothly,” Columbia said in a statement, adding that “these past few weeks have been incredibly difficult for our community”.
