Hello and welcome to the working week.

Central banks in the US and UK are both meeting to set interest rates — the Federal Reserve will announce its decision on Wednesday and the Bank of England on Thursday.

The mood music is that both will keep rates steady. Persistently high inflation and a fragile economy point to the BoE sticking, while Fed chair Jay Powell has cited a “range of uncertainties” and pledged the central bank will move carefully.

BP reports earnings on Tuesday and Shell on Thursday. BP has had a tumultuous few months following reports about chief executive Bernard Looney’s undisclosed past relationships with colleagues. For its half-year results, the oil major reported a 70 per cent drop in revenue compared with last year. Since then oil production cuts by Opec+ have pushed prices towards $90 a barrel, but weaker energy prices are expected to have taken their toll on the company.

Apple reports on Thursday, with overheating issues following the launch of the iPhone 13 in September likely to be in focus.

A clutch of carmakers report, including Stellantis, owner of the Fiat, Peugeot and Citroën brands. The company has been hit by strikes by members of the United Auto Workers union. In its third-quarter results last week, fellow automaker General Motors said the strikes had cost it an estimated $800mn in operating profit since they started five weeks ago.

One more thing . . .

I always try to include one thing I learned while looking at what’s coming up this week. This time it’s Mischief Night.

Traditionally celebrated in the North of England the evening before bonfire night, and in the US the night before Halloween, it is a time for pranks that border on illegal. Local police forces in some areas often make explicit statements encouraging the public not to take part, but the tradition, for better or worse, still seems to be alive and well.

Jonathan will be back next week.
