
Prime minister Gabriel Attal said the centrist bloc he campaigned for had not collapsed, defying expectations, but that he would resign on Monday as the group failed to secure an outright majority.
“According to Republican tradition and in accordance with my principles I will send my resignation tomorrow,” he said.
The 35-year old has fought a difficult campaign on behalf of Emmanuel Macron’s centrist party, defending Macron’s record on issues ranging from his unpopular pension reform to rising living costs and immigration.
But the centrist party has failed to secure an outright majority and came behind the leftwing Nouveau Front Populaire in polls.
“No outright majority was obtained by extreme parties, we owe this to a French spirit so profoundly attached to its values,” said Attal adding that “the political movement I represented is well alive.”
