Israel’s military on Friday called for the evacuation of Palestinians from the northern Gaza Strip to the south of the territory, in a move the UN said would affect 1.1mn people and could result in a “calamitous situation”.
The move would relocate about half of Gaza’s 2mn plus population.
Israel has launched air strikes on Gaza after Hamas militants killed more than 1,200 civilians and soldiers and kidnapped dozens more. It has also cut water, power and fuel supplies to the territory.
“The IDF calls for the evacuation of all civilians from Gaza City . . . from their homes, southwards, for their own safety and protection, and to move to the area south of . . . the River Gaza,” Israel Defense Forces spokesman Jonathan Conricus said in an online briefing.
“The United Nations considers it impossible for such a movement to take place without devastating humanitarian consequences,” UN spokesman Stéphane Dujarric said on Friday.
