Veteran Republican congressman Pete Sessions said he believed Donald Trump would change after surviving an assassination attempt by the “grace of God”.
“I don’t think there’s any question that a near-death experience like this has to shake you,” said Sessions, speaking on the BBC’s Today programme.
In the aftermath of the shooting attack on the former president on Saturday, Sessions said the tone of political debate “must change”.
“We must change the dialogue, we must change the attack angle, not just the party [and] the candidates but the American people,” he said.
“We’ve been led down the pathway that it is OK to verbally bludgeon each other . . . [but] the bottom line is no country can survive much of this.”
