Shares of chipmakers in Japan and South Korea fell further on Thursday after Donald Trump said Taiwan should pay for its own defence and following reports the US was considering tougher restrictions on chip sales to China.
In Japan, shares of Tokyo Electron fell 9.6 per cent. Disco Corporation, which makes the precision tools needed to manufacture chips, dropped 7.9 per cent. The broader Topix index declined 0.9 per cent, and the Nikkei 225 fell 1.8 per cent.
Losses in South Korea were more muted, with SK Hynix shedding 3 per cent and Samsung Electronics falling 1.4 per cent. The Kospi index lost 1.1 per cent.
Equities in Hong Kong and China also edged down.
