Australian police have evacuated Bondi Beach, the popular Sydney tourist spot, after an active shooting incident.
Gunmen opened fire at the north end of the beach and have since been “neutralised” according to the New South Wales police. There has not yet been confirmation of casualties after reports from the scene of multiple shootings.
An event to celebrate the first night of Hanukkah, the Jewish festival of light, was taking place on the beach at the time of the shooting.
Australia’s prime minister Anthony Albanese said in a statement: “The scenes in Bondi are shocking and distressing. Police and emergency responders are on the ground working to save lives.”
Allegra Spender, the MP for the area, said in a statement that it was a “horrifying” incident and urged people to follow police orders to avoid the beach.
“I know my whole community will come together to show support for our Jewish community,” she said.
New South Wales Police posted on X: “Two people are in police custody at Bondi Beach; however, the police operation is ongoing and we continue to urge people to avoid the area.”
