Trump shooting live: Biden glad to hear former president ‘safe’ and calls on nation to ‘unite as one’

US politicians from both sides of the aisle have taken to social media to urge political unity and wish Donald Trump a speedy recovery.

Republican Florida governor Ron DeSantis said in a social media post on X that he and his wife were praying for the former president and his family.

Democratic Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer said in a post she was “horrified to learn of this news” and that there “is not place for political violence in this country”.

Dean Phillips, the Minnesota congressman who mounted a challenge against Joe Biden in a Democratic primary earlier this year, said “No matter your politics, please pray for Donald Trump and pray for America.”

US Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell said “all Americans are grateful that President Trump appears to be fine after a despicable attack on a peaceful rally. Violence has no place in our politics. We appreciate the swift work of the Secret Service and other law enforcement.”

US Democratic Senate leader Chuck Schumer said in a post he was “horrified” by what happened at the rally and was “relieved” the former president is safe. “Political violence has no place in our country.
