Almost everything costs more right now—including travel. To help travelers who want to get away without breaking the bank, the experts at InsureMyTrip—a travel insurance aggregator and comparison site—recently analyzed data to issue a report on the cheapest destinations to visit in each part of the world.

“InsureMyTrip releases data reports like this to help educate travelers so they can make the best and most informed decisions for themselves and their unique trip,” says Suzanne Morrow, senior vice president for InsureMyTrip.

This is the first time that InsureMyTrip has done this report, and the data was based on travel insurance policies that InsureMyTrip.com sold for trips departing between June 21, 2023 through September 23, 2023. During that time, the overall average total cost of a trip for policyholders was $9,490—a 30% increase from the same period in 2022, when policyholders paid an average cost of $7,266. The average length of a trip was 14 days with three travelers.

In creating the report, the company looked at travel destinations around the globe—from Europe to Asia. Topping the list of the most affordable vacation spot in Europe was Austria, where the average trip was $6,932. Next on the list was Poland ($8,130), followed by Germany at $9,369. Compare those numbers to other popular destinations like the United Kingdom (which has an average cost of $10,179), Italy ($11,021) and France ($11,317).

The cheapest places to visit in other regions around the world include Puerto Rico ($4,392), Panama ($4,520), Colombia ($5,876), India ($5,666), Egypt ($13,177) and Fiji ($4,917).

According to Morrow, travel is reaching pre-pandemic numbers and people are more comfortable traveling internationally, as well. “The percentage of travelers purchasing travel insurance policies in 2023 is closer to where we were in 2019. In 2022 it appeared that travelers were a bit leery about traveling internationally. However, so far in 2023, we are seeing a rise in the number of travelers taking trips abroad,” says Morrow.

In addition to ranking the cheapest places to visit in each region, InsureMyTrip also looked at the 10 most popular international destinations, based on where policyholders were traveling between June 21, 2023 through September 23, 2023. Topping the list of the most popular travel destinations—Italy.

Read on for the lists of the cheapest place to visit in every region of the world, as well as the list of the most popular international travel spots right now.
