Marjorie Taylor Greene, the hardline Republican congresswoman close to Donald Trump, has launched a bid to oust Mike Johnson as Speaker of the House of Representatives, as chaos gripped the party’s slim majority in the lower chamber of the US Congress.
“I filed the motion to vacate today, but it’s more of a warning and a pink slip”, Greene told reporters after making the move on Friday. She said it was “time for us to go through the process, take our time, and find a new Speaker of the House, who will stand with Republicans and our Republican majority instead of standing with the Democrats”.
Greene did not put a timeline on when she would seek a vote to remove Johnson.
Greene’s move followed a vote by the House on Friday to approve a budget for the federal government, averting a shutdown.
This is a developing story.
